Head of Small Works Division

A highly respected construction business is launching a dedicated Small Works division and is seeking an entrepreneurial construction leader to establish, grow and lead the operation.
This is a rare opportunity to create a business unit from the ground up with the backing of an established contractor. The successful candidate will take ownership of developing the division, generating revenue, building key client relationships, appointing subcontractors and ultimately creating and leading their own team.
For the right individual, this is far more than a traditional management position. It is an opportunity to build a business within a business.

The Opportunity
We are looking for a commercially minded professional with extensive industry contacts across London and the surrounding areas.
You will already possess an established network of clients, consultants and subcontractors and understand how to convert relationships into profitable work streams.
The business has a strong reputation, financial stability and operational support already in place. Your role will be to develop a thriving Small Works division focused on delivering projects ranging from reactive works and refurbishment through to planned maintenance, fit out and minor construction projects.
Key Responsibilities
  • Establish and lead the Small Works division.
  • Develop a business plan and growth strategy for the department.
  • Generate new business opportunities through existing industry relationships.
  • Build and manage a reliable network of subcontractors and specialist suppliers.
  • Identify opportunities across commercial, education, healthcare, residential and public sector environments.
  • Lead tendering, pricing and negotiation activities.
  • Manage project delivery, profitability and client satisfaction.
  • Recruit and grow the division including project managers, surveyors, administrators and operational staff.
  • Establish processes, reporting systems and operational procedures.
  • Work closely with senior leadership to achieve growth targets.
  • Monitor financial performance, budgets and forecasts.
  • Ensure projects are delivered safely, profitably and to a high standard.
The Ideal Candidate
You will likely come from one of the following backgrounds:
  • Small Works Director
  • Contracts Director
  • Operations Director
  • Senior Contracts Manager
  • Commercial Manager
  • Business Unit Director
  • Regional Manager
Most importantly, you will have a proven track record of winning work and developing client relationships.
Essential Requirements
  • Significant experience within the construction, refurbishment or maintenance sector.
  • Strong network of client contacts across London and the South East.
  • Established subcontractor and supply chain relationships.
  • Demonstrable experience winning and delivering projects.
  • Strong commercial awareness and financial management skills.
  • Experience building and leading successful teams.
  • Excellent leadership and communication skills.
  • Ability to operate independently and take ownership of business performance.
