An Approved Electrician is expected to work independently, supervise others, and install electrical systems to a high standard in line with BS 7671 (18th Edition Wiring Regulations).
Metal Containment Work (Tray & Basket)
Cable Tray Installation
- Installing galvanised steel tray systems for supporting large cable runs
- Measuring, cutting, bending, and assembling tray sections
- Installing brackets, supports, and threaded rod systems
- Ensuring correct spacing, load capacity, and structural integrity
Cable Basket Installation
- Installing wire mesh (basket) containment mainly for data/lighting circuits
- Cutting and forming basket bends, tees, and risers
- Fixing to ceilings, walls, or raised floors
- Maintaining neat cable routing and segregation (e.g., power vs data)
Trunking & Conduit
- Installing metal trunking systems (surface or flush)
- Bending, threading, and installing steel conduit
- Pulling cables through containment safely
- Ensuring compliance with earthing and bonding requirements
Additional Responsibilities
- Reading and interpreting electrical drawings and schematics
- Marking out routes for containment systems
- Working at height (ladders, towers, MEWPs)
- Supervising improvers/mates/apprentices
- Testing and inspection (if qualified)
- Maintaining site safety in line with Health and Safety Executive guidelines
Skills & Requirements
- NVQ Level 3 in Electrical Installation (or equivalent)
- 18th Edition (BS 7671) qualification
- ECS Gold Card (Approved Electrician status)
- Strong experience with containment systems (tray, basket, trunking)
- Ability to work from drawings without supervision
- Good practical skills (cutting, bending, measuring accurately)
- IPAF is required
