Job Description

GENERAL FOREMAN- LONG TERM APPOINTMENT

Major Civil Infrastructure Project Tier 1 Main Contractor

The Opportunity

We are looking to recruit an experienced, hands-on General Foreman to join a major civil infrastructure project being delivered by a leading Tier 1 contractor.

The project is entering a critical construction phase, with the structural steel frame now commencing erection. We are looking for a strong site-based individual who can take ownership of the day-to-day construction activities, drive the workforce and subcontractors, and maintain momentum across multiple work fronts.

Reporting directly to the Project Director, this is a key role requiring a visible, proactive and delivery-focused individual who is comfortable leading from the front and taking responsibility for getting the job done.

We are particularly interested in candidates with a strong background in heavy civils, groundworks and major infrastructure construction, alongside experience managing structural steel and associated construction activities.

Key Responsibilities

  • Take a hands-on lead in the day-to-day running and delivery of site operations.
  • Drive construction activities across civils, groundworks, structural steel and associated infrastructure works.
  • Oversee and coordinate the ongoing structural steel frame erection programme.
  • Directly manage site supervisors, foremen, subcontractors and direct labour.
  • Maintain a strong physical presence on site, ensuring teams are organised, productive and working to programme.
  • Take ownership of daily planning, work sequencing, labour allocation and site productivity.
  • Coordinate groundworks, foundations, drainage, concrete, reinforced concrete and associated civil engineering activities.
  • Manage interfaces between civil engineering works, structural steel erection, lifting operations and temporary works.
  • Work closely with engineering, planning and project management teams to overcome construction challenges and maintain progress.
  • Monitor daily outputs, identify potential delays and take ownership of resolving issues before they impact the programme.
  • Provide regular and accurate progress updates directly to the Project Director.
  • Ensure all works are delivered safely and in accordance with approved RAMS, quality standards and project specifications.
  • Maintain high standards of site discipline, housekeeping, health and safety.

The Ideal Candidate

We are looking for a genuine construction professional who has come through the ranks and understands what it takes to deliver major projects on the ground.

You will ideally demonstrate:

  • A proven track record as a General Foreman or Senior Foreman on major civil engineering or infrastructure projects.
  • Extensive hands-on experience in heavy civils and groundworks.
  • Strong knowledge of earthworks, excavation, drainage, foundations, concrete works, reinforced concrete and general civil engineering operations.
  • Experience working on large-scale infrastructure schemes for a Tier 1 contractor or major civil engineering organisation.
  • Experience overseeing structural steel erection or working alongside specialist steelwork contractors.
  • The ability to manage multiple work fronts, subcontractors and large site teams.
  • Strong construction sequencing and programme awareness.
  • A proactive, practical approach to problem-solving and getting the job done.
  • The confidence and leadership skills to challenge poor performance and drive standards.
  • Excellent communication skills and the ability to report directly to senior project management.
  • SMSTS, CSCS and relevant industry qualifications.

The Type of Person We Want

This is very much a boots-on-the-ground, hands-on General Foreman role.

We are not looking for someone who simply walks the site, attends meetings and produces reports. We need someone who is out in the work areas, understands the construction activities, knows what the workforce should be achieving and has the experience and authority to make things happen.

You will be someone who:

Leads from the front and commands respect on site.

Understands civils and groundworks inside out.

Is comfortable getting involved in the detail of construction delivery.

Can organise labour, plant, materials and subcontractors effectively.

Has a strong eye for construction quality, productivity and programme.

Is decisive, commercially aware and solutions-focused.

Takes ownership rather than waiting to be told what to do.

The Opportunity

This is a key appointment on a major infrastructure project with the opportunity to work closely with and report directly to the Project Director.

For the right individual, this represents an opportunity to take real ownership of site delivery, influence construction performance and play a significant role in driving the project through its next major phase.

If you are a hands-on General Foreman with a strong heavy civils and groundworks background, who knows how to drive a site, manage people and deliver results, we want to hear from you.
