Design Manager - Chandler's Ford / Southampton
About this Role:
Experienced Design Manager required by the Chandler's Ford office of this major Tier One contractor, offering the opportunity to join a large regional business and manage design from preconstruction through construction delivery.
The initial project is an 18m defence scheme at Thorney Island, near Portsmouth, comprising a mix of new-build and refurbishment works including a two-storey office block, new armoury, gym and changing facilities, together with associated external works.
The scheme has been progressing through preconstruction and is due to start on site in January, followed by an approximately 18-month construction programme.
Working within a live operational environment, you will manage the design through the remaining preconstruction phase and into delivery, coordinating consultants, subcontractor design and the wider construction team.
.
About the Company/Client/Project:
This opportunity is with a major Tier One national contractor, operating a regional business with turnover of approximately 150m.
The region has a strong pipeline across defence, education and healthcare throughout Portsmouth, Havant and Southampton, including defence estate, DfE and healthcare schemes.
For candidates currently working within Tier Two contracting or consultancy, the role offers the opportunity to step into a Tier One environment, gaining exposure to larger and more complex projects, established systems and a significant regional pipeline.
.
Requirements:
You will be an experienced Design Manager with a strong understanding of the design process from preconstruction through construction delivery.
Applications are welcomed from existing Tier One Design Managers, strong Tier Two Design Managers looking to progress into Tier One contracting, and candidates from consultancy backgrounds where they can demonstrate relevant design ownership and delivery experience.
You will ideally have experience across consultant management, subcontractor design coordination, buildability, design programmes, information release, procurement interfaces and construction-stage delivery.
Strong technical knowledge, organisation and communication skills will be important, alongside the ability to coordinate multiple stakeholders and proactively resolve design issues.
Previous defence experience would be advantageous, although broader experience on technically demanding construction projects will also be considered.
