Quantity Surveyor

We are working with an established and growing boutique project management and cost consultancy specialising in some of the most distinctive residential and heritage projects across the South of England.

This is not a volume residential position.

The consultancy works predominantly with private clients on bespoke high-end homes, traditional country houses, major refurbishments, listed and heritage properties, alongside selected luxury hospitality projects.

Projects are design-led and often involve exceptional levels of craftsmanship, specialist consultants and demanding briefs where quality, detail and the client experience matter just as much as the numbers.

They are now looking for an experienced Quantity Surveyor to join their close-knit team in Hungerford.

Working closely with the Directors, Project Managers, professional teams and private clients, you will provide comprehensive cost consultancy and Quantity Surveying services from the early stages of a project through to completion.

Your responsibilities will include:

• Preparing feasibility estimates and detailed elemental cost plans

• Risk and value management

• Preparing tender documentation

• Managing procurement and tender processes

• Analysing tender returns and providing recommendations to clients

• Identifying value-engineering opportunities

• Reviewing monthly valuations and applications for payment

• Issuing payment notices and interim payment certificates

• Managing variations and change control

• Preparing regular cost reports

• Advising clients on contractual and commercial matters

• Undertaking Contract Administration responsibilities

• Supporting the resolution of contractual issues, claims and disputes

• Working closely with Project Managers, architects, designers, contractors and specialist suppliers

• Maintaining clear and confident communication with clients throughout the project

You will have considerable autonomy, so this position will suit somebody comfortable taking ownership rather than requiring a heavily structured corporate environment around them.

For this appointment, genuine high-end residential experience is important.

We are particularly interested in speaking with Quantity Surveyors who have worked on projects such as:

• Bespoke private residences

• Country houses and estates

• Prime or super-prime residential

• Listed and heritage properties

• Major residential refurbishments and restorations

• Luxury hotels or similarly high-specification environments

You should also be able to demonstrate strong experience across both pre and post-contract Quantity Surveying.

Ideally, you will have:

• At least 3 years' relevant Quantity Surveying experience

• Strong cost planning, tendering and procurement experience

• Experience reviewing valuations, variations and payment applications

• Good working knowledge of JCT contracts

• Contract Administration and/or Employer's Agent experience

• Experience producing cost reports and advising clients commercially

• A Quantity Surveying or relevant construction qualification

• RICS or CIOB accreditation, or be working towards professional qualification

• Strong Excel and general IT skills

Experience within a consultancy/private practice environment would be highly advantageous. However, experienced contractor-side Quantity Surveyors will also be considered where they can demonstrate substantial high-end private residential experience and the ability to operate confidently in a client-facing consultancy environment.

Technical ability is only part of what will make somebody successful here.

Many projects are undertaken for discerning private clients, so you must be personable, articulate and commercially confident, while understanding the importance of discretion and excellent client service.

You should be somebody who can walk into a client meeting, communicate comfortably with different personalities and explain complicated commercial issues clearly without unnecessarily complicating them.

You'll need the confidence to challenge something when it doesn't look right, but the judgement and interpersonal skills to do so constructively.

Above all, you'll be pragmatic, detail-conscious and solutions-focused somebody who doesn't simply identify a problem but starts thinking about how to resolve it.

This is an opportunity to move away from repetitive, volume-driven construction and become involved in genuinely individual projects.

You'll join a small, experienced and growing consultancy where you can have a meaningful influence on projects, work directly with clients and see schemes through from initial concept and cost planning to completion.

Most projects are located within approximately an hour of the Hungerford office, with the role combining office-based collaboration, client meetings and regular project/site visits.

For the right individual, there is also genuine scope for the position to develop as the consultancy continues to grow.

Salary: £55,000 £80,000 depending on experience.
