Looking for a Clerk of Works role where you can make a real impact across a diverse estate?
This key position sits within West Yorkshire Police’s Estates and Business Services Directorate, providing expert M&E support across a diverse estate of around 100 operational and specialist buildings. We’re looking for someone who can work confidently both independently and as part of a busy team, managing a varied workload with ease.
As a key member of our technical team, you’ll deliver in‑house assurance, on‑site inspections, contractor oversight and compliance monitoring across projects, reactive and planned maintenance, and major installations. You’ll work closely with project managers, engineers and specialists to keep our estate safe, compliant and performing at its best.
This is an excellent opportunity for a skilled building services professional to play a vital role in maintaining and improving a complex live estate while contributing to impactful projects that directly support frontline policing. The role is based primarily in Central Wakefield; however, the ability to travel throughout West Yorkshire is essential.
Role and Responsibilities
You will play a key role in ensuring the safe, compliant and efficient delivery of all mechanical and electrical works across the estate. What you'll be doing: Lead Environmental Assurance Take ownership of environmental assurance across your area, making sure construction activities meet environmental commitments, regulatory requirements and project standards. Influence Contractor Delivery Build solid relationships with the main contractor, providing constructive challenge and guidance while ensuring environmental requirements are embedded throughout delivery. Get Out on Site Be close to the work, carrying out audits, inspections and assurance checks, identifying issues and opportunities and making sure environmental standards are being delivered in practice. Solve Complex Challenges Work alongside engineering, environmental and delivery specialists to develop practical, cost-conscious mitigation strategies across areas such as landscape, ecology and wider environmental impacts. Lead & Coordinate Manage one environmental professional while collaborating with a broad range of technical specialists, stakeholders and contractor teams to drive excellent environmental performance. Who they're looking for: Major Project Experience You'll have experience working in environmental management on a large, complex infrastructure project or programme, ideally within a challenging delivery environment. An Excellent Influencer People skills are essential. You'll be confident building relationships, influencing contractor teams and senior stakeholders, and challenging constructively when standards or requirements aren't being met. Technical Credibility You'll have key knowledge of UK environmental legislation and regulatory requirements, alongside the technical expertise to provide credible environmental leadership and assurance. Commercially Minded You'll understand the realities of major project delivery and be comfortable balancing environmental requirements with cost, programme and engineering considerations to find practical solutions.
