Looking for a Clerk of Works role where you can make a real impact across a diverse estate?

This key position sits within West Yorkshire Police’s Estates and Business Services Directorate, providing expert M&E support across a diverse estate of around 100 operational and specialist buildings. We’re looking for someone who can work confidently both independently and as part of a busy team, managing a varied workload with ease.

As a key member of our technical team, you’ll deliver in‑house assurance, on‑site inspections, contractor oversight and compliance monitoring across projects, reactive and planned maintenance, and major installations. You’ll work closely with project managers, engineers and specialists to keep our estate safe, compliant and performing at its best.

This is an excellent opportunity for a skilled building services professional to play a vital role in maintaining and improving a complex live estate while contributing to impactful projects that directly support frontline policing. The role is based primarily in Central Wakefield; however, the ability to travel throughout West Yorkshire is essential.

Role and Responsibilities

You will play a key role in ensuring the safe, compliant and efficient delivery of all mechanical and electrical works across the estate. This includes overseeing contractor performance, carrying out on‑site inspections, contributing to surveys, validating compliance, and helping project teams resolve technical issues and improving asset data.

To succeed, you’ll need a strong working knowledge of industry regulations, standards, and Health and Safety requirements, along with the ability to tackle day‑to‑day issues and solve practical problems with confidence.

Key duties include:

  • Supervising mechanical and electrical elements of construction, refurbishment, repairs and maintenance works
  • Carrying out on‑site inspections, audits, validations and monitoring to ensure compliance with design, specification, legislation and industry best practice
  • Supporting the delivery of M&E engineering projects, including planned and reactive maintenance and minor works
  • Liaising with contractors, consultants and internal teams to resolve technical issues and maintain consistent standards
  • Monitoring performance of mechanical and electrical systems, including Building Management Systems (BMS), to ensure safety, reliability and effectiveness
  • Working to tender specifications, contract documentation and technical drawings
  • Identifying risks, escalating issues and ensuring corrective action is taken where required
  • Undertaking building condition and dilapidation surveys to support asset management and project planning
  • Witnessing testing and commissioning of new installations and providing technical guidance to colleagues

Expectations

To succeed in this role, you will be expected to:

  • Communicate effectively with contractors, consultants and internal teams, providing clear written and verbal technical advice
  • Work confidently with specifications, tender scopes, pricing documents and technical design drawings
  • Coordinate and manage contractors across multidisciplinary projects, reactive repairs, planned maintenance and PPM programmes
  • Validate contractor payment applications (ideal but not essential)
  • Apply strong mechanical and electrical engineering knowledge to diagnose and solve technical issues
  • Manage competing priorities, work under pressure and meet deadlines
  • Interpret regulations, design documentation and compliance requirements accurately
  • Apply Health and Safety, Building Regulations and statutory standards in daily work
  • Work independently and collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team
  • Travel throughout West Yorkshire as required

Essential Criteria

  • A qualified building services engineer with relevant mechanical or electrical experience
  • City & Guilds Level 3 / ONC Mechanical or Electrical Engineering or professional experience demonstrating equivalent competency
  • Strong knowledge of current industry regulations, standards and Health and Safety legislation
  • Experience managing and coordinating mechanical and electrical contractors
  • Ability to work to specifications, tender scopes and technical drawings
  • Experience validating contractor payment applications
  • Excellent technical communication skills
  • Ability to prioritise a varied workload and work both independently and as part of a team
