An established and growing civil engineering contractor is looking to appoint a Health & Safety Advisor on a contract or fixed-term basis for an anticipated period of approximately nine months. The successful candidate will support the delivery of major civil engineering and infrastructure projects in the Falkland Islands, working within technically demanding, exposed and operational environments. The contractor delivers complex projects involving heavy civil engineering, reinforced concrete, structural works and the construction and maintenance of essential infrastructure. Projects can involve challenging weather conditions, sensitive environments, remote locations, higher-risk construction activities and significant logistical considerations. Working closely with the company s UK Health & Safety Manager and site-based operational teams, you will play an important role in maintaining high standards of health, safety and environmental performance across the Falkland Islands operation. The Role This is a practical, site-focused position involving close interaction with project managers, supervisors, operatives and subcontractors. You will provide professional advice while helping operational teams establish safe and effective methods of delivering the work. Key responsibilities will include: Providing professional health, safety and environmental advice to managers, supervisors, site personnel and subcontractors. Undertaking regular site inspections, formal audits, workplace observations and behavioural safety interventions. Providing practical coaching and guidance to improve standards and encourage safe working practices. Supporting the preparation, review and implementation of risk assessments, method statements and project-specific procedures. Assisting with the development and monitoring of safe systems of work, permits and controls for higher-risk construction activities. Monitoring compliance with company standards, client requirements and applicable UK and Falkland Islands legislation. The role therefore requires someone capable of balancing legislative and procedural compliance with the practical realities of delivering civil engineering work in a remote overseas location. You will need to be visible on site, approachable and confident enough to challenge unsafe practices while retaining the cooperation and respect of the operational workforce. The Person Applications are welcomed from Health & Safety Advisors with experience in construction, civil engineering or a closely related infrastructure environment. You should possess: A NEBOSH General Certificate or an equivalent Level 3 health and safety qualification. Approximately two to three years relevant experience within construction or civil engineering. A practical understanding of site-based health and safety management and construction risk. Experience preparing, reviewing or supporting risk assessments, method statements and safe systems of work. Strong communication, organisational and reporting skills. A proactive and pragmatic approach, together with the ability to influence others without creating unnecessary barriers to delivery. The resilience, flexibility and personal circumstances required to work overseas for extended periods within a remote environment. IOSH membership, or progress towards membership, would be advantageous but is not essential. The position would particularly suit someone who enjoys being closely involved with operational teams and prefers a practical, site-based health and safety role rather than one focused predominantly on office-based compliance. Contract and Rotation The appointment is expected to last approximately nine months and will be offered on either a contract or fixed-term basis. The anticipated working pattern will consist of three months in the Falkland Islands followed by three weeks in the UK. During the UK element of the rotation, you will support the Falkland Islands operation from the company s Gateshead office, subject to project requirements.
