Job Description

Quantity Surveyor

Location: north Midlands
Salary: Up to 55,000, dependent on experience

The Opportunity

Our client is a well-established structural steelwork fabricator with a strong reputation for delivering exceptional and iconic projects across the UK. Due to continued demand and the development of their commercial team, they are looking to recruit a Quantity Surveyor to support the commercial management of projects from procurement through to final account.

This is an excellent opportunity for an established QS with experience in structural steelwork or a related construction subcontracting environment to join a specialist business delivering complex, high-profile projects.

Structural steelwork experience would be ideal; however, candidates from other relevant subcontracting sectors will also be considered. The client is interested in commercially minded individuals who understand subcontractor packages, project costs and the importance of effective commercial management.

Key Responsibilities

  • Manage the commercial aspects of allocated projects, ensuring costs, revenue and margins are monitored effectively.

  • Prepare, submit and manage applications for payment, valuations and variations.

  • Measure, assess and price variations, ensuring changes to project scope are captured and commercially agreed.

  • Monitor project costs against budgets, identifying risks, discrepancies and opportunities to protect profitability.

  • Manage subcontractor and supplier procurement, including reviewing quotations, placing orders and administering subcontract agreements.

  • Prepare and agree subcontractor valuations, payments and final accounts.

  • Liaise with clients, main contractors, project managers, site teams, suppliers and subcontractors to resolve commercial issues.

  • Maintain accurate commercial records, cost reports and project documentation.

  • Assist with forecasting, cash flow management and regular commercial reporting.

  • Identify potential commercial risks and opportunities, escalating issues where appropriate.

  • Work closely with the estimating, contracts and operational teams to ensure projects are delivered within agreed commercial parameters.

  • Support the preparation, negotiation and agreement of final accounts with clients and subcontractors.

About You

The successful candidate will be an organised and commercially aware Quantity Surveyor who can manage competing priorities, communicate effectively with stakeholders and contribute to the successful financial delivery of projects.

Ideally, you will have:

  • Experience working as a Quantity Surveyor within structural steelwork, steel fabrication or a related construction subcontracting business.

  • A good understanding of subcontractor commercial management, including valuations, variations, procurement and final accounts.

  • Experience monitoring project costs, managing budgets and identifying commercial risks.

  • The ability to interpret project information, drawings, specifications and contractual requirements.

  • Strong negotiation, communication and relationship-building skills.

  • Good numerical, analytical and problem-solving abilities.

  • Strong organisational skills and attention to detail.

  • Confidence using Microsoft Excel and relevant commercial or project management systems.

  • A relevant qualification in Quantity Surveying or a related discipline, or equivalent practical experience.

Sector experience: Structural steelwork is preferred, but candidates with relevant experience in other construction subcontracting sectors will be considered.

What's on Offer

  • Salary of up to 60,000, depending on experience.

  • Hybrid working.

  • The opportunity to join an established and respected specialist contractor.

  • Exposure to high-profile and technically interesting projects across the UK.

  • The opportunity to develop your commercial expertise within a specialist subcontracting environment.

  • Long-term career progression within an established commercial team.
