Role Overview
To lead and continually improve the Company's Health & Safety performance, ensuring safe systems of work, effective risk management and compliance with legal, client and industry requirements.
The role will provide leadership across Health & Safety, Quality and Environmental matters, with Health & Safety as the primary focus. Particular emphasis will be placed on the safe delivery of highways, roadworks, civil engineering and construction activities, including compliance with relevant legislation, industry standards and ISO 45001:2018, with working knowledge of ISO 9001:2015 and ISO 14001:2015.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead and promote a positive Health & Safety culture across the business.
- Develop, implement and continually improve Health & Safety policies, procedures and safe systems of work.
- Provide practical Health & Safety advice and support to operational and site teams.
- Lead site inspections, audits, risk assessments, incident investigations and corrective actions.
- Monitor legal, regulatory, client and certification compliance and communicate relevant changes.
- Manage Health & Safety risks associated with highways and roadworks, including traffic management, temporary works, excavation, plant and machinery, and working adjacent to live traffic.
- Support and influence managers, site teams, subcontractors and suppliers to maintain high safety standards.
- Deliver effective Health & Safety training, briefings and toolbox talks.
- Lead the QHSE function and support continual improvement across Quality and Environmental systems.
- Maintain and improve the QMS, including non-conformance, corrective actions, internal auditing, document control and supplier management.
- Liaise with clients, principal contractors, subcontractors and external authorities on QHSE matters.
Key Skills & Experience
- 10+ years' Health & Safety experience, ideally within the highways, roadways, infrastructure, civil engineering or construction sector.
- Significant site-based Health & Safety management experience, with proven experience in highways/roadworks environments highly desirable.
- Strong knowledge of UK Health & Safety legislation and ISO 45001:2018.
- Practical understanding of highways construction, traffic management, temporary works, excavation, plant and machinery, and working alongside live traffic.
- Experience of managing and influencing site teams, subcontractors and contractors.
- Strong risk assessment, auditing, incident investigation and compliance experience.
- Minimum 5 years' experience managing or supervising people and leading operational teams.
- Ability to deliver effective training, toolbox talks and safety briefings.
- Working knowledge of ISO 9001:2015 and ISO 14001:2015.
- NEBOSH General Certificate or higher is essential, together with relevant auditing and incident investigation training.
