Design Manager

Location: York
Salary: 45,000 (DOE)
Hours: 36.5 hours per week
Monday to Thursday: 8:30am to 5:00pm (1 hour Lunch Break)
Friday: Early finish at 4:00pm
Holidays: 26 days + Bank Holidays

We are currently recruiting for an experienced Design Manager to join a well-established and growing specialist contractor within the industrial roofing, cladding and building envelope sector.

This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced Design Manager, Senior Designer or technically strong roofing and cladding professional looking to take ownership of the design function within a growing business.

The successful candidate will work closely with the Directors and wider project teams, taking responsibility for design management, technical coordination and subcontractor management across a range of industrial and commercial projects.



The Role

As Design Manager, you will act as the key technical point of contact throughout the design process. You will take projects from commercial handover through design development and approval, ensuring that designs are technically sound, buildable, compliant and aligned with the original tender scope and budget.

Key responsibilities will include:

  • Managing internal and external designers and design subcontractors
  • Setting clear technical standards and submission requirements
  • Reviewing and approving drawings, details and material schedules before client submission
  • Tracking design deliverables against project programmes and deadlines
  • Ensuring designs remain aligned with tender scope, specifications and budgets
  • Carrying out detailed buildability and technical reviews
  • Providing technical expertise across industrial roofing, cladding and building envelope systems
  • Identifying potential design or installation issues before they reach site
  • Coordinating with main contractors, architects, designers and site teams
  • Leading and participating in internal and external project/design meetings
  • Supporting projects from initial design stages through to successful delivery


The Candidate

The successful candidate should ideally have: (Desirrable not essential)

  • Strong knowledge of industrial roofing and cladding systems
  • Experience within building envelope, fa ade, roofing or cladding projects
  • Previous experience reviewing technical drawings and specifications
  • A good understanding of buildability and installation requirements
  • Experience managing or coordinating external designers/subcontractors
  • Strong communication and client-facing skills
  • The ability to manage multiple projects and design deadlines
  • A commercially aware approach to design and project delivery
  • The confidence to work closely with senior management and Directors

This position would particularly suit somebody who can hit the ground running and become a key technical figure within the business, reporting directly to the Directors.
