Mechanical Construction Manager Major Hospital Project Surbiton, South West London

We are currently seeking an experienced Mechanical Construction Manager to join a leading Tier 1 MEP Contractor on a major hospital project based in Wimbledon, South West London.

This is a fantastic opportunity to join an established project team working on a large-scale healthcare development, with responsibility for overseeing the mechanical construction activities and ensuring works are delivered safely, efficiently and to the highest standards.

The position is long-term, with both permanent and freelance candidates being considered.

The Role

As Mechanical Construction Manager, you will take responsibility for the day-to-day management and delivery of mechanical works on site, working closely with the wider project management, engineering and construction teams.

You will oversee mechanical subcontractors, engineers and site-based teams, ensuring that works are delivered in accordance with the programme, drawings, specifications, quality requirements and health & safety standards.

This is a site-based position requiring a proactive and experienced manager who can take ownership of the mechanical package and effectively coordinate activities across a complex and technically demanding healthcare environment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Manage and oversee the day-to-day delivery of mechanical installation works on site.

  • Lead and coordinate mechanical subcontractors, engineers and site-based teams.

  • Ensure mechanical works are delivered in line with the approved programme and project requirements.

  • Coordinate mechanical activities with electrical, public health and other MEP disciplines.

  • Review drawings, specifications and technical information to ensure installations are being delivered correctly.

  • Monitor progress, productivity and quality of mechanical works.

  • Work closely with the Project Manager, Construction Manager and engineering teams to resolve technical and construction-related issues.

  • Ensure all works are completed in accordance with relevant standards, specifications and project procedures.

  • Maintain a strong focus on health & safety, quality and programme delivery.

  • Attend and lead relevant site and coordination meetings.

  • Monitor subcontractor performance and ensure resources are appropriately managed.

  • Assist with planning, sequencing and coordination of mechanical works.

  • Identify potential delays, clashes and construction issues and implement appropriate solutions.

  • Work closely with QA/QC and commissioning teams to ensure mechanical systems are ready for testing, commissioning and handover.

  • Maintain strong relationships with the client, consultants, subcontractors and wider project team.

About You

The successful candidate will have significant experience working as a Mechanical Construction Manager on large-scale MEP or construction projects.

Ideally, you will have:

  • Proven experience managing mechanical construction packages on major projects.

  • Previous experience working for a Tier 1 MEP contractor or major MEP subcontractor.

  • Strong knowledge of mechanical installation and construction processes.

  • Experience managing mechanical subcontractors and site-based teams.

  • Strong understanding of HVAC, pipework, plant, BMS interfaces and associated mechanical services.

  • The ability to read and interpret mechanical drawings, specifications and technical documentation.

  • Strong understanding of project programmes, sequencing and construction coordination.

  • Excellent communication, leadership and problem-solving skills.

  • A strong understanding of health & safety and quality requirements.

  • Previous experience working on healthcare, hospital or other technically complex projects would be highly advantageous.

  • Relevant mechanical qualifications and appropriate site certifications.
