Role Overview

We are looking for an experienced Scrap Crane / Material Handler Operator to join our operations team at a busy metal recycling facility. The successful candidate will be responsible for safely operating heavy plant machinery to move, sort, and load scrap materials while maintaining high standards of safety and efficiency.

This role is well suited to operators with experience in mobile cranes, excavators, or material handlers, particularly those working with grab or magnet attachments.

Key Responsibilities

• Operate a scrap material handler crane to load, unload, and sort scrap metal.

• Use grapple or magnet attachments to move scrap safely and efficiently.

• Load scrap materials into processing equipment, containers, or transport vehicles.

• Maintain good awareness of surroundings to ensure safe operation around staff and other machinery.

• Conduct daily pre-use inspections and basic maintenance checks on machinery.

• Report any faults, defects, or maintenance issues promptly.

• Work closely with yard staff and supervisors to maintain smooth operations.

• Follow all health, safety, and environmental procedures.

• Maintain a clean and organised working area.

Skills and Experience

• Experience operating scrap cranes, material handlers, excavators, or mobile cranes.

• Good understanding of safe lifting and material handling practices.

• Ability to operate heavy machinery safely in a busy industrial environment.

• Strong situational awareness and attention to detail.

• Ability to work independently and as part of a team.

• Good communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications

• Relevant plant operator certification (e.g., CPCS, NPORS, or equivalent).

• Experience working in scrap, recycling, waste management, construction, or heavy industry.

• Mechanical awareness and ability to carry out basic equipment checks.

Working Environment

• Industrial recycling facility or scrap yard environment.

• Operation of heavy machinery in outdoor conditions.

• Compliance with strict health and safety procedures.

• Use of PPE at all times.
