The Role
We are currently recruiting for an Area Scheduler to support a busy highways maintenance contract in Cambridgeshire. This is a key role responsible for planning, programming and coordinating a wide range of highways maintenance works, ensuring all activities are efficiently scheduled, compliant with Street Works regulations, and delivered within contractual timescales.
You will work closely with depot supervisors, inspectors, delivery teams and local authority stakeholders to maximise productivity, manage permits, and ensure safety defects and reactive works are scheduled effectively.
Key Responsibilities
Prepare and manage highways maintenance programmes in collaboration with Depot Supervisors and Area Management
Plan, coordinate and optimise works to improve efficiency and resource utilisation
Schedule safety defect repairs and reactive works within agreed response times
Create, manage and update Street Works permits in line with legislation and local authority requirements
Liaise with Local Authority Street Works teams, Highway Officers and Inspectors
Coordinate traffic management, advance warning signage and resident communications
Allocate emergency works to appropriate gangs and support the delivery teams
Update programmes with live progress and escalate delays or risks where required
Schedule work orders to mobile devices and support operatives with system use (Causeway)
Ensure materials are ordered in line with scheduled works
Maintain accurate programme and scheduling system records
Support KPI reporting and assist with administrative duties as required
Skills & Experience Required
Previous experience in scheduling or programming construction or maintenance works (highways experience preferred)
Strong understanding of Street Works permitting and the Traffic Management Act
Working knowledge of NRSWA and Safety at Street Works and Road Works Code of Practice
Confident IT user, with good experience of Microsoft Office (Excel, Outlook, etc.)
Experience working with mobile workforce or scheduling systems is desirable
Strong communication skills, both written and verbal
Ability to manage multiple priorities and work to tight deadlines
