This key position sits within West Yorkshire Police’s Estates and Business Services Directorate, providing expert M&E support across a diverse estate of around 100 operational and specialist buildings. We’re looking for someone who can work confidently both independently and as part of a busy team, managing a varied workload with ease.
As a key member of our technical team, you’ll deliver in‑house assurance, on‑site inspections, contractor oversight and compliance monitoring across projects, reactive and planned maintenance, and major installations. You’ll work closely with project managers, engineers and specialists to keep our estate safe, compliant and performing at its best.
This is an excellent opportunity for a skilled building services professional to play a vital role in maintaining and improving a complex live estate while contributing to impactful projects that directly support frontline policing. The role is based primarily in Central Wakefield; however, the ability to travel throughout West Yorkshire is essential.
Role and Responsibilities
You will play a key role in ensuring the safe, compliant and efficient delivery of all mechanical and electrical works across the estate. This includes overseeing contractor performance, carrying out on‑site inspections, contributing to surveys, validating compliance, and helping project teams resolve technical issues and improving asset data.

Key duties include:
Supervising mechanical and electrical elements of construction, refurbishment, repairs and maintenance works
Carrying out on‑site inspections, audits, validations and monitoring to ensure compliance with design, specification, legislation and industry best practice
Supporting the delivery of M&E engineering projects, including planned and reactive maintenance and minor works
Liaising with contractors, consultants and internal teams to resolve technical issues and maintain consistent standards
Monitoring performance of mechanical and electrical systems, including Building Management Systems (BMS), to ensure safety, reliability and effectiveness
Working to tender specifications, contract documentation and technical drawings
Identifying risks, escalating issues and ensuring corrective action is taken where required
Undertaking building condition and dilapidation surveys to support asset management and project planning
Witnessing testing and commissioning of new installations and providing technical guidance to colleagues

Interpret regulations, design documentation and compliance requirements accurately
Apply Health and Safety, Building Regulations and statutory standards in daily work
Work independently and collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team

Essential Criteria
A qualified building services engineer with relevant mechanical or electrical experience
City & Guilds Level 3 / ONC Mechanical or Electrical Engineering or professional experience demonstrating equivalent competency
Strong knowledge of current industry regulations, standards and Health and Safety legislation
Experience managing and coordinating mechanical and electrical contractors
Ability to work to specifications, tender scopes and technical drawings
Experience validating contractor payment applications
Excellent technical communication skills
Ability to prioritise a varied workload and work both independently and as part of a team

Maintain all design correspondence in electronic format in section '3.1 - Designers' of the individual job folders - enquiries, orders, fee proposals, email correspondence, design deliverables. Candidate Requirements: Degree (or equivalent) in Civil Engineering / Structural Engineering / Building Engineering / Project Management or other relevant engineering subject. Professional Accreditation (ICE or IStructE) (Desirable) and ready to support others with their development. Minimum 5 years experience in the rail sector. 2 plus years' experience working within the railway industry in the delivery & management of the delivery of rail projects. 3 plus years in the delivery and management of Civil Engineering projects. Experience working as part of a team and coaching less experienced team members.
