Upfront Recruitment
Quantity Surveyor / Estimator - Civils & Energy
Upfront Recruitment Milford Haven, Dyfed
Quantity Surveyor / Estimator Salary: 35,000 - 55,000, depending on experience Location: Thornton / Milford Haven, Pembrokeshire Position: Full-time, Permanent If you're building a career in quantity surveying or estimating and want exposure to work that's a little different from standard building projects, this is well worth considering. We're recruiting for an established, engineering contractor in Pembrokeshire that has been operating for more than 40 years. Their work takes them into some of the region's major industrial sites, supporting projects across oil and gas, civil engineering, facilities maintenance and renewable energy. They are now looking for a Quantity Surveyor / Estimator to join the commercial team. Importantly, they aren't fixed on finding someone with 10 or 15 years behind them. An experienced Quantity Surveyor / Estimator who can take ownership from the outset would fit well, but they're equally interested in someone earlier in their career who has the right construction background and wants to develop. That could be an Assistant Quantity Surveyor, Junior Quantity Surveyor, Estimator or someone with commercial construction experience who is ready for more responsibility. The company The business has been established since 1983 and operates from its base at Thornton Industrial Estate near Milford Haven. Their work is closely tied to the energy and industrial sectors around Pembrokeshire, with site operations supporting major facilities around the Haven. Alongside their established civil engineering, maintenance and shutdown work, the company has also moved into renewable energy, including large-scale ground-mounted solar projects. That mix is one of the attractions of the position. You won't be boxed into one narrow type of project. The Quantity Surveyor / Estimator will get exposure to both pre-contract and live project commercial work, working alongside the people actually delivering it. What will you be doing? The role sits across estimating and quantity surveying, so you'll be involved from the point an enquiry lands through to the commercial management of the job. You'll review drawings and specifications, prepare estimates and tenders, complete material and labour take-offs and obtain prices from suppliers and subcontractors. Once projects are live, your involvement will continue through site measures, valuations, applications for payment, variations, cost monitoring, subcontract accounts and final accounts. There will be a mixture of office and site-based work, giving you the chance to understand the projects properly rather than working purely from a spreadsheet. Who are they looking for? Some previous exposure to quantity surveying, estimating or the commercial side of construction is important. You'll need a basic understanding of construction costs and commercial processes, and ideally some experience with valuations, applications for payment, variations or site measures. Experience within civil engineering, structural repair, refurbishment, specialist construction, petrochemical work or renewables would be useful, but the company is not looking for someone who ticks every possible box. An HNC, HND or degree in Quantity Surveying, Construction or a related subject would also be useful, but again, the level of the appointment is flexible. For someone more experienced, there is scope to come in and take real responsibility. For someone more junior, this is an opportunity to learn both estimating and quantity surveying within an established contractor, with support as your commercial experience develops. What's on offer? 35,000 to 55,000 salary, depending on experience Full-time, permanent position Genuine opportunity for a junior or developing QS / Estimator Exposure to civil engineering, industrial, oil & gas and renewable energy projects A varied role covering both estimating and live project commercial management Scope to take on more responsibility as your experience grows If you're already working as a Quantity Surveyor / Estimator, or you're at an earlier stage of your commercial career and looking for somewhere you can properly develop, we'd be interested in hearing from you. Contact Mark at Up Front Recruitment for more information.

Barker Ross
Quantity Surveyor
Barker Ross
An opportunity to make your mark in a growing business Are you a Quantity Surveyor with estimating experience, or an Estimator with strong commercial/QS experience, looking for a role with more variety, responsibility and progression? This is an opportunity to join an established, family-run building contractor with many years trading history, an excellent reputation across the East Midlands and an exciting pipeline of new work. The business is growing, winning more contracts and expanding into larger premises. As a result, they are looking for an experienced commercial professional who wants to get stuck in, take ownership and grow with the business. The Role This is a genuine 50/50 QS and Estimating role, although the balance will flex with workload. You'll be involved throughout the project lifecycle, from tendering and estimating through to procurement, commercial management and final accounts, working on projects typically ranging from 25k to 4m. Experience will extend to CVRs, project forecasting and cash flow projections. Projects include refurbishment, fit-out, alteration, maintenance and new build, across public and private-sector clients. Key responsibilities Prepare detailed estimates, tender build-ups and pricing submissions. Review drawings, specifications and tender documentation. Obtain, analyse and negotiate subcontractor and supplier quotations. Ability to identify and manage contractual, financial and project risks, scope gaps, exclusions and commercial opportunities. Support tender negotiations, value engineering and public-sector bids. Manage project costs, valuations, variations, forecasting and final accounts. Manage subcontractor packages and commercial negotiations. Procurement of subcontractor and supplier packages. Produce cost-value reconciliations and commercial reports. Build strong relationships with clients, consultants, subcontractors and suppliers. Work closely with Contracts Managers and senior management to manage commercial risks and maximise opportunities. About you We're looking for an experienced, commercially minded and hands-on construction professional who can operate with a high degree of autonomy and take ownership of both estimating and commercial management, someone who is comfortable working in an SME environment where everyone gets involved. You'll ideally have: Experience as a Quantity Surveyor, Estimator or QS/Estimator within a main contractor. Strong estimating/tendering and commercial management experience including post-tender clarifications and negotiations Experience across refurbishment, fit-out, maintenance, alteration and/or new build. Experience with projects broadly within the 25k- 4m range. Strong knowledge of procurement, valuations, variations, cost control, forecasting and final accounts. Experience managing subcontractor packages and supply-chain relationships. Confidence using commercial, estimating and project management systems. Excellent communication and organisational skills. A full UK driving licence. Public-sector experience is important Experience working with NHS, healthcare, local authority, education, police, fire or other blue-light/public-sector clients would be highly advantageous. An understanding of public-sector procurement, frameworks, tenders and SQ/PQQ processes would be particularly useful. This role is unlikely to suit someone whose experience is purely residential. Why join? This is a business where your contribution will be visible. You'll join a committed, long-standing team within an established company, while also having the opportunity to play a key role in its next stage of growth. You'll have: Genuine responsibility and autonomy. Exposure to both estimating and commercial management. Direct involvement with senior management. The opportunity to influence project profitability and new contract wins. A supportive, non-corporate working environment. Genuine progression opportunities, including the potential to develop into senior commercial management roles. The opportunity to grow alongside a business that is actively expanding. The person We're looking for someone who is ambitious, resilient, results-oriented and commercially sharp, but equally a team player who isn't afraid to roll their sleeves up. If you're looking for more responsibility, more variety and a genuine opportunity to progress, we'd like to hear from you. The company is an equal opportunity employer and welcomes applications from all suitably skilled and qualified candidates. Barker Ross Group values diversity and promotes equality.
