Ivy Resource Group are working with a well-established contractor to recruit an experienced Estimator for a permanent role based in Gloucester. You will be working on a range of education, healthcare, commercial property, residential housing and private clients, with projects ranging from a few hundred pounds to around 25 million. The Role: Review tender documents - study drawings, specifications, schedules and other project information. Measure quantities - calculate the amount of labour, materials and work required for each part of the project. Prepare cost estimates - price materials, labour, plant, subcontractors and other project costs. Obtain subcontractor quotations - contact specialist subcontractors and suppliers and compare their prices. Analyse project risks - identify uncertainties, potential extra costs and commercial risks. Build the tender price - bring all costs together to produce the overall price submitted to the client. Work with the wider team - collaborate with quantity surveyors, contracts managers, buyers, architects and engineers. Check and compare prices - make sure quotations and calculations are accurate and competitive. Attend site visits - understand site conditions, access, logistics and any issues that could affect the price. Meet tender deadlines - make sure estimates and supporting information are completed and submitted on time. Support negotiations - help answer client queries and clarify pricing during the tender process. Learn from previous projects - use historical costs and project data to improve future estimates. Help protect profit margins - make sure the project is priced competitively without underestimating the true cost The Ideal Candidate: Construction knowledge - understands how buildings are constructed and the different trades involved. Strong numerical skills - comfortable working with quantities, measurements, costs and budgets. Attention to detail - able to spot errors or omissions in drawings, specifications and quotations. Commercial awareness - understands that the aim is to win work while maintaining a healthy profit margin. Good analytical skills - can break a large construction project into individual costs and assess them accurately. Tendering experience - ideally has experience preparing or assisting with construction tenders. Subcontractor management - confident obtaining, comparing and evaluating subcontractor and supplier quotations. Good communication - able to communicate clearly with clients, subcontractors, suppliers and colleagues. IT skills - comfortable with Excel and construction estimating/tendering software. Organised and deadline-focused - can manage several estimates and meet tight tender deadlines. Problem-solving ability - able to identify potential issues in a project and find practical solutions. Team player - works effectively with quantity surveyors, project managers, buyers and site teams. Willingness to learn - particularly important for a junior or graduate estimator; curiosity about construction and commercial processes is valuable. This is a senior position offering the opportunity to take ownership of the estimating process, lead a talented pre-construction team and play a key role in securing new work for the business. The Role As Estimating Manager, you will take responsibility for the effective management and delivery of the estimating function, ensuring tenders are commercially robust, competitive and aligned with the company's strategic objectives. Key responsibilities will include: Lead and manage the estimating team across multiple concurrent tenders. Take overall responsibility for the estimating function and tender workload. Review incoming opportunities and provide recommendations on bid/no-bid decisions. Establish estimating strategies for individual projects. Review tender documentation, drawings, specifications and employer's requirements. Allocate tenders and workload across the estimating team. Lead the preparation of accurate and competitive tenders. Prepare and review detailed cost plans and estimates. Analyse subcontractor and supplier quotations. Develop and maintain strong relationships with subcontractors and suppliers. Identify appropriate subcontractors and suppliers for individual packages. Negotiate quotations and secure competitive market rates. Review and challenge quotations to ensure scope alignment. Identify project risks, exclusions, assumptions and opportunities. Ensure all risks are appropriately considered within tender submissions. Attend tender adjudications and present estimates to senior management. Prepare commercial reports and tender summaries for Directors. Work closely with the Commercial, Pre-Construction, Design and Operations teams. Liaise with clients, consultants, architects and quantity surveyors throughout the tender process. Attend client meetings, site visits and tender interviews. Support the preparation of value engineering proposals. Identify alternative construction methodologies and cost-saving opportunities. Provide commercial input during the design development process. Ensure tender programmes and submission deadlines are achieved. Maintain accurate estimating records and tender documentation. Develop and improve estimating procedures, systems and processes. Monitor market conditions, labour rates, material prices and subcontractor trends. Support the development of junior and senior estimators through mentoring and technical guidance. Contribute to the continued growth and development of the pre-construction department. About You The successful candidate will be an experienced Estimator or Estimating Manager with a strong background within main contracting . You will ideally have: Significant experience within a UK main contractor environment. Previous experience managing or leading an estimating team. Strong knowledge of the London and South East construction market. Proven experience pricing projects across multiple sectors. Experience working on projects ranging from approximately £1m to £20m+. Strong understanding of construction methodology and buildability. Excellent knowledge of subcontractor procurement and supply chains. Strong understanding of construction costs, preliminaries, overheads and margins. Experience with detailed cost planning and tender analysis. Strong commercial awareness. Excellent negotiation and supplier management skills. Experience leading tender adjudications. Strong client-facing and presentation skills. The ability to analyse complex tender documentation. Due to continued growth and a strong pipeline of secured and upcoming projects, they are looking to appoint an experienced Fire Stopping Estimator to strengthen their pre-construction team. This is an exciting opportunity for an accomplished estimator who has extensive knowledge of passive fire protection systems and is looking to join a forward-thinking company where quality, compliance and customer satisfaction are at the forefront of everything they do. The Role Reporting directly to the Pre-Construction Manager, you will be responsible for producing accurate and commercially competitive tenders for a wide range of fire stopping projects throughout the UK. You will play a pivotal role in the tendering process, reviewing project documentation, carrying out detailed take-offs, obtaining supplier and subcontractor quotations, identifying commercial risks and ensuring all estimates comply with current fire safety legislation and industry standards. The successful candidate will be confident working independently while collaborating closely with surveyors, project managers, contracts managers and clients to deliver accurate costings and successful project handovers. Key Responsibilities Produce detailed and accurate estimates for passive fire protection and fire stopping packages. Review tender enquiries, architectural drawings, specifications, schedules and scope documents. Carry out comprehensive quantity take-offs and material calculations. Prepare competitive tenders within strict deadlines while maintaining accuracy. Source and negotiate pricing with suppliers and specialist subcontractors. Evaluate project risks, exclusions and opportunities for value engineering. Attend pre-tender meetings, site visits and client meetings where required. Build strong relationships with clients, contractors, consultants and suppliers. Support business development by assisting with negotiated tenders and repeat business opportunities. Maintain an up-to-date knowledge of current fire safety regulations, industry guidance and product developments. Work closely with the operational team to ensure seamless transition from tender award through to project delivery. Candidate Requirements To be considered for this position you must possess: A minimum of 8 years' proven experience estimating within the passive fire protection/fire stopping industry. Demonstrable experience pricing a wide range of fire stopping works including penetration sealing, compartmentation, linear gap seals, fire batt systems, mastic, wraps, collars and associated passive fire protection products. Strong knowledge of UK Building Regulations, Approved Document B and relevant British Standards relating to passive fire protection. Excellent understanding of construction drawings, specifications and technical documentation. Experience using estimating software and Microsoft Office packages, particularly Excel. Strong commercial awareness with the ability to identify risks and opportunities during the tender process. Excellent organisational and time management skills with the ability to manage multiple tenders simultaneously. Outstanding communication and negotiation skills. Ability to work independently whilst contributing effectively within a collaborative team environment. Full UK Driving Licence (preferred). Desirable Experience FIRAS, BM TRADA or other third-party certification knowledge. Experience working with principal contractors, housing associations, local authorities and Tier 1 contractors. Understanding of digital take-off software and estimating platforms. Experience pricing projects ranging from small remedial works through to large multi-million-pound contracts.
