Work with the wider team - collaborate with quantity surveyors, contracts managers, buyers, architects and engineers. Check and compare prices - make sure quotations and calculations are accurate and competitive. Attend site visits - understand site conditions, access, logistics and any issues that could affect the price. Meet tender deadlines - make sure estimates and supporting information are completed and submitted on time. Support negotiations - help answer client queries and clarify pricing during the tender process. Learn from previous projects - use historical costs and project data to improve future estimates. Help protect profit margins - make sure the project is priced competitively without underestimating the true cost The Ideal Candidate: Construction knowledge - understands how buildings are constructed and the different trades involved. Strong numerical skills - comfortable working with quantities, measurements, costs and budgets. Attention to detail - able to spot errors or omissions in drawings, specifications and quotations. Commercial awareness - understands that the aim is to win work while maintaining a healthy profit margin. Good analytical skills - can break a large construction project into individual costs and assess them accurately. Tendering experience - ideally has experience preparing or assisting with construction tenders. Subcontractor management - confident obtaining, comparing and evaluating subcontractor and supplier quotations. Good communication - able to communicate clearly with clients, subcontractors, suppliers and colleagues. IT skills - comfortable with Excel and construction estimating/tendering software. Organised and deadline-focused - can manage several estimates and meet tight tender deadlines. Problem-solving ability - able to identify potential issues in a project and find practical solutions. Team player - works effectively with quantity surveyors, project managers, buyers and site teams. Willingness to learn - particularly important for a junior or graduate estimator; curiosity about construction and commercial processes is valuable.
