Could you be our next Highways Lighting Operative to join the team and drive this success forwards? What will I be doing in this role? As a Highways Lighting Operative , you will be responsible for the installation, maintenance, and repair of highway lighting systems such as streetlights, traffic signs and other street furniture. Some of your role will involve: Operating a HIAB HGV to transport, lift, and position street lighting columns, bollards, and traffic signs Installing street lighting columns and associated street furniture (non-electrical) Carrying out excavation, groundwork, and foundation preparation for installations Removing and replacing damaged or old columns, signs, and bollards Using hand tools and plant equipment to complete installations to specification Working closely with team members to coordinate site activities and minimise disruption to traffic and pedestrians Ensuring all work is completed in line with health and safety regulations and site procedures Maintaining accurate job records using handheld devices Carrying out daily vehicle and equipment checks to ensure safe operation What do I need to be successful in the role? We are looking for you to bring your previous experience working in the Civils/Fibre/construction industry, we would also love you to have: Previous experience in highways, construction, or civils works Strong practical skills, including excavation Good understanding of site safety and safe systems of work Experience using CAT & Genny Physical fitness and the ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions The ability to work at pace while maintaining high standards of quality and safety Basic IT skills for using handheld devices to log work Good communication skills and a team-focused attitude Some of our nice to haves are: IPAF or PASMA or HERS certification Experience operating a HIAB crane A valid Class 2 (Category C) HGV licence G39 Electrical Safety Training Experience in public lighting, highways maintenance, or infrastructure works HIAB (ALLMI) certification Street works (NRSWA) qualification Knowledge of HSG47 safe digging practices Installation of lighting columns and associated groundwork We can however support the right candidate to achieve any level of industry training/qualifications they may not have in the nice to have list. We're looking to strengthen our business by recruiting an early careers cohort in 2026 and have an exciting opportunity for a number of apprentice general operatives to join our project teams across the south of the UK. This is a full-time role where you'll learn on the job while working towards a nationally recognised Level 2 apprenticeship in Highways Maintenance. Attendance at college will be required in blocks of at least a week with overnight accommodation provided You'll join an operational project team and develop practical skills through a mix of real site experience and structured training. Apprenticeships combine work with study, including paid time during your working hours for training and learning. No previous construction experience is required - full training and support will be provided. What you'll be doing Working alongside experienced operatives to support project operational activities such as kerb laying and footway works, drainage repairs and installation, asphalt and patching works, general civils and groundworks Learning how to carry out tasks safely and to the required standard Using tools, plant and equipment safely (with training and authorisation) Attending training blocks and applying what you learn back on site Following health, safety, wellbeing and environmental procedures Keeping work areas tidy and safe Reporting hazards, near misses or unsafe conditions Representing VolkerHighways professionally on site About you We're looking for someone reliable, motivated and keen to learn, who enjoys practical, physical, outdoor work and working as part of a team. You'll need: An interest in construction and working outdoors A positive attitude, good timekeeping and a strong focus on safety A flexible approach to working hours as this can involve early starts, night work, weekends and working shifts Commitment to attending and completing training as scheduled Willingness to obtain a CSCS card if you don't already have one A driving licence is not required at application stage, but you must be willing to work towards a full UK driving licence during the apprenticeship, as it will be needed for operational duties Maths and English You do not need to already hold GCSE Maths or English to apply. Apex Resources Limited are on the lookout for a 278 Civils Supervisor in Haslingden, BB4 Duties: To be considered, you will come from a Highways, Utilities or Civil Engineering background and hold relevant Supervisor accreditation under the New Roads and Street Works Act 1991 (NRSWA), with demonstrable experience supervising Section 278 and highway works. The Street Works Supervisor will be responsible for overseeing and monitoring street and highway works to ensure full compliance with statutory requirements, contract drawings, specifications, permits, and safety standards. The role will include supervising site teams and subcontractors undertaking works on the public highway.
