Overview

An established civil engineering contractor delivering major UK infrastructure schemes is seeking an experienced Project Manager to lead a large-scale heavy civils package in Birmingham. This role will suit a delivery-focused professional with a strong background in groundworks, highways, and haulage roads, and a proven track record of managing self-delivered works on complex infrastructure projects.

The successful candidate will take full responsibility for project execution, ensuring programmes are met, commercial performance is maintained, and works are delivered safely and to specification.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead end-to-end delivery of heavy civils packages including bulk earthworks, deep drainage, reinforced concrete structures, road construction, and associated infrastructure.

  • Manage significant self-delivery operations, including direct labour, plant, and in-house resources.

  • Develop and maintain detailed project programmes, ensuring critical milestones and deadlines are achieved.

  • Oversee site-based teams including Site Agents, Engineers, Forepersons, and subcontractors.

  • Ensure all works are delivered in line with technical specifications, design drawings, and quality standards.

  • Drive health & safety performance, ensuring works comply with CDM regulations and company procedures.

  • Manage project budgets, cost forecasting, and value engineering opportunities in collaboration with commercial teams.

  • Lead regular progress meetings with stakeholders, consultants, and client representatives.

  • Mitigate construction risks through proactive planning and strong operational control.

  • Ensure effective logistics planning and coordination of plant, materials, and workforce.

  • Produce progress reports and maintain accurate project documentation.

Experience & Background Required

  • Proven experience as a Project Manager on major civil engineering or infrastructure schemes.

  • Strong background delivering heavy civils packages valued £10m+.

  • Demonstrable experience in:

    • Large-scale groundworks

    • Highways construction

    • Haulage roads

    • Earthworks and deep drainage

  • Strong track record of managing self-delivery models (direct labour and internal plant).

  • Experience managing multidisciplinary site teams on fast-paced infrastructure projects.

  • Excellent programme management and sequencing capability.

  • Strong commercial awareness with experience working alongside Quantity Surveyors.

  • Effective stakeholder management skills with clients and consultants.

  • SMSTS, CSCS (Black/Professional), and First Aid qualifications essential.

Desirable

  • Experience working on nationally significant infrastructure projects.

  • Knowledge of NEC contracts.

  • Temporary works coordination experience.

  • Civil Engineering degree or equivalent qualification.
