Position Overview:
As a Senior Mechanical Design Engineer, you will be responsible for leading and managing complex mechanical design projects, ensuring high-quality results in line with customer requirements and industry standards. You will work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team, providing technical leadership and mentoring junior engineers. Key Responsibilities:
- Lead the mechanical design process for a variety of projects, from concept through to completion, ensuring designs meet functional, safety, and regulatory requirements.
- Produce detailed mechanical drawings, CAD models, and technical specifications.
- Work closely with cross-functional teams (electrical, software, and systems engineers) to ensure seamless integration of designs.
- Provide technical oversight and mentorship to junior engineers, helping to develop their skills and capabilities.
- Collaborate with the project management team to define project scope, deliverables, and timelines, ensuring that projects are delivered on time and within budget.
- Conduct design reviews, feasibility studies, and risk assessments to identify and mitigate potential issues.
- Liaise with suppliers and manufacturers to source materials, components, and services, ensuring quality and cost-effectiveness.
- Oversee prototype builds and support testing and validation phases.
- Keep abreast of emerging technologies, industry trends, and best practices to continuously improve design processes.
Essential Skills & Qualifications:
- A degree (or equivalent) in Mechanical Engineering or a related discipline.
- Significant experience (5+ years) in mechanical design, preferably within a similar industry (automotive, aerospace, defence, industrial).
- Strong proficiency in 3D CAD software (e.g., SolidWorks, Revit, AutoCAD, or similar).
- Solid understanding of mechanical systems, thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, and materials science.
- Experience in leading design teams and mentoring junior engineers.
- Knowledge of manufacturing processes, including assembly, machining, and injection moulding.
- Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines.
- Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, with the ability to communicate technical information clearly.
- A proactive and solution-focused mindset with a hands-on approach.
Desirable Skills & Qualifications:
- Chartered Engineer (CEng) status or working towards it.
- Experience with FEA (Finite Element Analysis) or CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) tools.
- Knowledge of regulatory standards (e.g., ISO, CE, MIL-STD).
- Experience in designing for high-volume or high-complexity manufacturing environments.
