That could be an Assistant Quantity Surveyor, Junior Quantity Surveyor, Estimator or someone with commercial construction experience who is ready for more responsibility. The company The business has been established since 1983 and operates from its base at Thornton Industrial Estate near Milford Haven. Their work is closely tied to the energy and industrial sectors around Pembrokeshire, with site operations supporting major facilities around the Haven. Alongside their established civil engineering, maintenance and shutdown work, the company has also moved into renewable energy, including large-scale ground-mounted solar projects. That mix is one of the attractions of the position. You won't be boxed into one narrow type of project. The Quantity Surveyor / Estimator will get exposure to both pre-contract and live project commercial work, working alongside the people actually delivering it. What will you be doing? The role sits across estimating and quantity surveying, so you'll be involved from the point an enquiry lands through to the commercial management of the job. You'll review drawings and specifications, prepare estimates and tenders, complete material and labour take-offs and obtain prices from suppliers and subcontractors. Once projects are live, your involvement will continue through site measures, valuations, applications for payment, variations, cost monitoring, subcontract accounts and final accounts. There will be a mixture of office and site-based work, giving you the chance to understand the projects properly rather than working purely from a spreadsheet. Who are they looking for? Some previous exposure to quantity surveying, estimating or the commercial side of construction is important. You'll need a basic understanding of construction costs and commercial processes, and ideally some experience with valuations, applications for payment, variations or site measures. Experience within civil engineering, structural repair, refurbishment, specialist construction, petrochemical work or renewables would be useful, but the company is not looking for someone who ticks every possible box. An HNC, HND or degree in Quantity Surveying, Construction or a related subject would also be useful, but again, the level of the appointment is flexible. For someone more experienced, there is scope to come in and take real responsibility. For someone more junior, this is an opportunity to learn both estimating and quantity surveying within an established contractor, with support as your commercial experience develops. Estimator - Surfacing & Civils Location: Scunthoripe, North Lincolnshire Salary: 50k - 60k + Benefits Job Type: Permanent The Role We are currently recruiting for an experienced Estimator to join an established and growing surfacing and civils business. This is a key position within the commercial and pre-construction team, responsible for pricing a range of tenders and quotations, completing detailed take-offs and working closely with clients, suppliers and operational teams. The successful candidate will have previous estimating or quantity take-off experience and be confident working with tender documentation, supplier quotations and commercial pricing. Key Responsibilities Manage estimating opportunities from initial enquiry through to tender submission. Prepare detailed take-offs, quantities and cost estimates . Price tenders and quotations accurately and competitively. Review drawings, specifications and contract documentation to identify scope, risks and opportunities. Obtain and compare quotations from subcontractors and suppliers. Maintain accurate pricing and cost databases. Monitor tender pipelines and conversion rates. Record and analyse tender outcomes and reasons for wins and losses. Work closely with Commercial Managers and operational teams to ensure a smooth handover of successful projects. Develop strong working relationships with clients, suppliers, framework partners and consultants. Keep up to date with market rates, legislation, standards and industry developments. Ensure tender submissions and estimating records are accurate and completed within required timescales. About You The ideal candidate will have: Previous experience in estimating, quantity take-offs or pre-construction . Experience pricing construction tenders and quotations. Ideally, experience within surfacing, highways, civils or a related construction sector . Strong commercial awareness and excellent attention to detail. Good knowledge of estimating and take-off software. Excellent IT skills, including Microsoft Office. Strong organisational and time-management skills. The ability to manage multiple tenders and deadlines. Excellent communication skills when dealing with clients, suppliers and colleagues.
