Highways Maintenance Technician
Introduction
We are looking to recruit a Highways Maintenance Technician on a contract with Shropshire Council. The successful candidate should have a minimum of 5 years’ experience in construction or highway environment.
The Role
The Highways Operations team is tasked with managing the day to day activities on the Highway ensuring that the highway remains safe and fit for purpose. Highway maintenance technicians respond to customer service requests, undertake scoping and quoting processes in line with contractual requirements, monitor contractor performance and develop programmes for routine maintenance programmes such as lines, signs, cleansing and drainage.
Role of a Highways Maintenance Technician
The post holder is responsible for the liaison with contractors and/or consultants representatives, compliance with contractual requirements, quality of data input on Confirm, management of contractual process, efficient ordering of works and services in line with agreed contract processes and financial management.
The post holder will also act as service wide liaison with their designated Cllrs, act as point of contact, regularly meet and inform on future service wide works that will impact on their local community.
Key Responsibilities of a Highways Maintenance Technician
Responsible to Highway Maintenance Manager who is in turn responsible for the post holder’s health and safety, training and development
Expected to lead and/or contribute to a range of projects and build relations with both internal and external partners in order achieve specified outcomes, but will not have direct authority over those involved
Respond and resolve customer service requests in line with Council timescales
Assist in the preparation of Freedom of Information and insurance claim responses for queries within the post holders remit
Monitoring of contractor performance
Undertaking scoping and quoting process in line with contractual requirements
Ensure processing of payment requests from contractors/consultants are resolved promptly and in accordance with contractual timescales
Proactively manage payment disputes with the contractor within contractual timescales
Focus on ensuring value for money when ordering and scoping works
Support development of the Future Works Programme
Manage work identified by inspectors that is outside the scope of their remit
Decision making in accordance with winter maintenance service policy
Support the council and defend against any insurance claims
Attend court as and when required
Instruct drainage investigations
Undertake proactive enforcement of breaches of relevant legislation
Undertake safety barrier inspections
Requirements of a Highways Maintenance Technician
5 years’ experience of working in construction or highway environment
Experience of highway inspections
Construction methods and maintenance techniques
Qualified to ONC/OND level
Registered Highway Technician or ability to obtain certification upon appointment
