Quantity Surveyor - Groundworks & Civils Location: Nottingham Experience: 2-3 years About the Role An established groundworks and civil engineering contractor is looking for a Quantity Surveyor to join their commercial team. The business delivers groundworks, foundations, drainage, roads, earthworks, infrastructure and external works across residential and commercial developments. The role would suit a Assistant QS, QS, Groundworks Estimator or commercially minded construction professional with around 2-3 years' relevant experience. Strong groundworks/civils knowledge and commercial awareness are key. Key Responsibilities Commercial management of groundworks and civils projects. Carry out take-offs, measurements, estimates and valuations. Review drawings, specifications and tender enquiries. Assist with subcontractor procurement and negotiations. Monitor project costs, budgets and forecasts. Manage and price variations and additional works. Assist with subcontractor applications, payments and final accounts. Prepare applications for payment and commercial reports. Liaise with clients, main contractors, subcontractors and site teams. Work closely with Site and Project Managers to ensure projects are delivered commercially. Ideal Background 2-3 years' experience within groundworks, civils, construction or a related environment. Experience of drainage, foundations, roads, earthworks, utilities or residential groundworks. QS, estimating or commercial experience is beneficial. Able to understand drawings, quantities, costs and project requirements. Strong communication, organisational and numerical skills. Commercially aware with a willingness to develop. You will join an experienced estimating team and work closely with Senior Estimators and the Chief Estimator, receiving training and hands-on exposure to the complete tender process. The role would suit a Junior Estimator looking to develop their experience, or someone at an earlier stage of their career with strong numerical skills and an interest in groundworks, civil engineering, estimating or commercial construction. The Role As Junior Estimator, you will assist with the preparation of accurate and competitive tender submissions across a variety of groundworks and civil engineering projects. Your responsibilities will include downloading and reviewing tender documentation, drawings, specifications and bills of quantities, setting up and maintaining tender files and ensuring all tender information is accurately recorded and controlled. You will assist with measurement and quantity take-offs for packages including earthworks, drainage, roads, external works, foundations, slabs and services. The position will also involve preparing and issuing enquiries to subcontractors and suppliers, collating returned quotations and assisting the estimating team with checking quotations against tender requirements. You will schedule materials from drawings, specifications and bills of quantities and assist with tender clarifications, pricing schedules and supporting commercial documentation. You will also gain experience uploading bills of quantities and pricing schedules into Candy estimating software, with training available where required. As your experience develops, you will gain greater exposure to pricing, cost analysis, commercial risks and the wider tender decision-making process. You should be organised and methodical, comfortable working with numbers, drawings, schedules and technical information and capable of working accurately to deadlines. Good Microsoft Office skills are required, particularly Excel, Word and Outlook. Previous experience within construction, groundworks, civil engineering, estimating, procurement, commercial administration or another technical environment would be advantageous but is not essential. A relevant qualification in construction, civil engineering, quantity surveying, estimating, construction management or commercial management would also be beneficial, although candidates with the right aptitude and attitude will be considered. Experience using Candy estimating software would be advantageous but is not essential, as training can be provided. Good GCSEs or equivalent in Maths and English are expected.
