Assistant Commercial Manager Major Infrastructure Two roles. One of the biggest infrastructure projects in Europe. Our client is looking for two Assistant Commercial Managers to join an integrated client team delivering major infrastructure works. These are early-career commercial roles, ideally suited to a graduate quantity surveyor looking for their second position, someone who has had a solid grounding in NEC contract administration and now wants more: more complexity, more exposure, and a clear path toward chartership. What the role involves You will work in an integrated client team, sitting alongside project managers and commercial leads to assure and support the commercial performance of Tier 1 contractors. That means reviewing their work, not doing it for them. You will administer NEC contracts day to day, raise and manage early warnings, track compensation events and support the assessment of change costs. You will get involved in procurement reviews, help validate subcontractor accounts and support the settlement of final accounts. Month to month, you will be contributing to contract performance reporting and helping the team maintain commercial control across live works packages. What we are looking for NEC contract experience is essential. If you have not worked with NEC3 or NEC4 in a meaningful way, this role is not the right fit. Beyond that, we are looking for someone with a quantity surveying background and a genuine appetite to develop commercially on a complex programme. Experience in infrastructure is a strong advantage. Highways, rail, utilities, civils: all relevant. A background in building or MEPH is also genuinely interesting to our client. If you are working toward your APC, our client can support that journey. You will be working on a range of education, healthcare, commercial property, residential housing and private clients, with projects ranging from a few hundred pounds to around 25 million. The Role: Review tender documents - study drawings, specifications, schedules and other project information. Measure quantities - calculate the amount of labour, materials and work required for each part of the project. Prepare cost estimates - price materials, labour, plant, subcontractors and other project costs. Obtain subcontractor quotations - contact specialist subcontractors and suppliers and compare their prices. Analyse project risks - identify uncertainties, potential extra costs and commercial risks. Build the tender price - bring all costs together to produce the overall price submitted to the client. Work with the wider team - collaborate with quantity surveyors, contracts managers, buyers, architects and engineers. Check and compare prices - make sure quotations and calculations are accurate and competitive. Attend site visits - understand site conditions, access, logistics and any issues that could affect the price. Meet tender deadlines - make sure estimates and supporting information are completed and submitted on time. Support negotiations - help answer client queries and clarify pricing during the tender process. Learn from previous projects - use historical costs and project data to improve future estimates. Help protect profit margins - make sure the project is priced competitively without underestimating the true cost The Ideal Candidate: Construction knowledge - understands how buildings are constructed and the different trades involved. Strong numerical skills - comfortable working with quantities, measurements, costs and budgets. Attention to detail - able to spot errors or omissions in drawings, specifications and quotations. Commercial awareness - understands that the aim is to win work while maintaining a healthy profit margin. Good analytical skills - can break a large construction project into individual costs and assess them accurately. Tendering experience - ideally has experience preparing or assisting with construction tenders. Subcontractor management - confident obtaining, comparing and evaluating subcontractor and supplier quotations. Good communication - able to communicate clearly with clients, subcontractors, suppliers and colleagues. IT skills - comfortable with Excel and construction estimating/tendering software. Organised and deadline-focused - can manage several estimates and meet tight tender deadlines. Problem-solving ability - able to identify potential issues in a project and find practical solutions. Team player - works effectively with quantity surveyors, project managers, buyers and site teams. Willingness to learn - particularly important for a junior or graduate estimator; curiosity about construction and commercial processes is valuable.
