Job Description
JOB PURPOSE
To maintain the Public Rights of Way network in West Berkshire for the enjoyment of the community and visitors, under the direction of the Public Rights of Way Officer (Maintenance and Enforcement).
To fulfil the Council’s statutory duties to assert and protect the rights of the public to use this network.
To assist when required with countryside tasks or projects within the Countryside and Environment Unit
To effectively contribute to the management of the environment of West Berkshire
MAIN DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
To undertake practical maintenance, new, improvement and repair work on the council’s network of Public Rights of Way, under the direction of the Public Rights of Way Officer Maintenance and Enforcement.
To undertake emergency repair works on Public Rights of Way under the direction of the Public Rights of Way Officer.
Where necessary, to report any obstructions or problems encountered to the Public Rights of Way Officer.
To be aware of current and new legislation regarding Public Rights of Way and associated countryside issues.
To maintain good working relationships with landowners and members of the public.
To assist where required with countryside and nature conservation projects, events and promotions.
To be aware of and to comply with all the relevant health and safety legislation and associated codes of practice and Authority policies.
To assist in maintaining good working relationships with landowners, user groups and parish councils
To foster good working practices and assistance to colleagues in the Countryside and Environment Unit to improve the service to the community.
To work with the Parish Paths Initiatives Officer on joint works programmes to ensure effective use of resources and budgets
Qualifications And Training
At least two years experience of undertaking practical countryside management work
Experience in use of mini-digger
Experience in use of brushcutters and hedgetrimmers
Understanding of Risk Assessment procedures
Competence Summary

Knowledge of Public Rights of Way legislation pertaining to practical management of the network.
An ability to work outside in all conditions.
Ability to lift and carry loads safely.
Ability to carry out strenuous physical work.
An ability to walk reasonable distances in the countryside in all weathers.
Ability to complete practical work of a good standard and work to deadlines.
Ability to operate within set health and safety guidelines.
Experience of talking to landowners and members of the public about the work being undertaken
