Site Engineer - Civil Engineering (Highway Structures) The Role A leading civil engineering contractor is delivering a major infrastructure scheme in Oxfordshire and is looking to appoint an experienced Site Engineer to support delivery on a complex highways and structures project. Working closely with the Section Engineer and site management team, you'll be responsible for core engineering activities on site, including setting out, quality control, coordination with subcontractors, and ensuring works are delivered safely, accurately, and to programme. This role would suit someone with strong site-based engineering experience, ideally gained with a main contractor on highways or heavy civil projects. Key Duties & Responsibilities Carry out setting out, surveying, and measurement works Check and interpret drawings, specifications, and technical information Plan daily engineering activities to support programme requirements Coordinate materials, plant, and information with procurement and site teams Liaise with designers, subcontractors, and third parties to resolve technical queries Supervise works on site and monitor subcontractor performance Ensure compliance with Health, Safety, Environmental, and Quality standards Maintain accurate site records, reports, and as-built information Arrange testing, inspections, and calibration of equipment where required Identify technical issues early and propose practical solutions Support the Site Agent and Section Engineer with wider site activities Contribute ideas to improve buildability, efficiency, and site processes Experience & Qualifications Essential Degree (or equivalent) in Civil Engineering or Construction Management Previous experience in a Site Engineer role on civil engineering projects Strong setting out and surveying capability Confident communicator with the ability to coordinate across teams CSCS (or equivalent) card Site Health & Safety induction First Aid at Work certification Desirable Background on highways, bridges, or major infrastructure schemes Experience working for a main contractor Familiarity with AutoCAD, GPS, and modern surveying equipment Understanding of materials, testing regimes, and quality control processes Exposure to procurement planning and site logistics Personal Attributes Organised and methodical with strong attention to detail Proactive approach to problem-solving Comfortable working independently while supporting the wider team Adaptable and able to work in a fast-paced construction environment Keen to develop professionally and take on increased responsibility Package & Benefits Competitive salary Car allowance Contributory pension scheme Subsidised private medical cover Life assurance Long-term opportunity on a flagship infrastructure project

The Role A major highways infrastructure project in Oxfordshire is seeking an experienced Section Engineer to take ownership of a defined section of works on a complex highways and structures scheme. This is a senior site-based engineering role, sitting between the Site Engineer and Site Agent, with responsibility for coordinating engineering activities across bridge structures, reinforced concrete elements, and associated highways works. The successful candidate will play a key role in ensuring technical accuracy, buildability, and safe delivery of structurally complex elements of the project. Engineers with proven experience on bridges, highway structures, or heavy civil engineering works are strongly encouraged to apply. Key Duties & Responsibilities Take engineering ownership of a designated section of works, including bridges and structural elements Lead and coordinate Site Engineers within your section Oversee setting out, surveying, and quality control for structural and highways works Review and manage drawings, specifications, and technical queries (RFIs) Ensure works are delivered in accordance with design, specification, and programme Plan and sequence engineering activities to support construction milestones Liaise closely with designers, subcontractors, and the site management team Supervise subcontractor works, particularly RC, formwork, piling, and structural packages Monitor quality inspections, test plans, and as-built records Ensure Health, Safety, and Environmental standards are implemented across your section Identify technical risks and drive engineering solutions early Support short-term planning and contribute to programme updates Mentor and support junior engineers and engineering trainees Experience & Qualifications Essential Degree (or equivalent) in Civil Engineering or a related discipline Proven experience as a Section Engineer or Senior Site Engineer on civil engineering projects Strong background in highways infrastructure and structural works Demonstrable experience delivering bridge structures, reinforced concrete, or heavy civils elements Excellent setting out, surveying, and technical coordination skills Strong communication skills with the ability to lead site-based engineering teams CSCS card and site Health & Safety induction First Aid at Work certification Desirable Direct experience on highway bridges, overbridges, underpasses, or major structures Background with a main contractor on large infrastructure schemes Temporary Works Supervisor or Coordinator experience Familiarity with AutoCAD, GPS, and modern surveying technologies Understanding of NEC contracts and early warning processes Personal Attributes Technically strong with a hands-on approach to site engineering Confident leading engineers and coordinating multidisciplinary teams Proactive problem-solver with strong attention to detail Able to manage multiple work fronts in a live construction environment Adaptable and resilient when working on complex structural packages Package & Benefits Competitive salary reflecting seniority and experience Car allowance Contributory pension scheme Subsidised private medical cover Life assurance Long-term role on a flagship highways and structures project
