Job Purpose: To undertake civils work on the drainage network across the Southern water region. Job Responsibilities: To receive and follow instructions given by the supervisor /civils manager To undertake a daily pre-start, Point of Works Risk Assessment (POWRA) and brief the risk to your team members and to all visitors to site and get same to sign acknowledgement To carry out CCTV surveys work as described in the work order in a timely and safe fashion, including but not limited: dig down repair, manhole rebuilds/Covers, and AFD/interceptor install/removal To always wear and ensure that everyone else on site, including visitors, also wear the mandated and appropriate personal protective equipment (clothing) which is provided by the Company To be able to use a hand-held device to capture the relevant information from the job To complete paperwork in tidy and timely manner To ensure that any vehicle you are driving is road worthy before you drive it by undertaking and recording daily vehicle checks including for trailers and towable plant To ensure that any vehicle you drive is maintained clean and in good order To work safely and in accordance with the training received, company work instruction and daily site-specific work risk (SSWR) assessments To be available to participate in a call out Rota Personal Attributes s courteous, and respectful always Is attentive to safe working practices Listen carefully, ask clarification questions Make necessary adjustment to the worksite if applicable Make your manager aware of all site visitors and the purpose of the visit Conscientious Reliable Positive Self Starter Experience Required: Sewer network or drainage utility experience Essential Qualifications Full clean driving license Streetworks (NRSWA) Confined space training High-pressure water jetting training. General Operative The Vacancy Key Responsibilities Site Preparation and Maintenance: Assist in preparing the work site by clearing debris, setting up barriers, and ensuring that all necessary tools and materials are available. Maintain a clean and organized work environment, ensuring that all waste materials are disposed of properly. Assist in setting up and dismantling temporary structures, such as site huts, barriers, and access routes. Trenching and Excavation: Perform manual excavation tasks, including digging trenches for sewerage pipes and manholes. Assist with the safe use of hand tools and power tools for cutting, drilling, and breaking ground. Support the operation of mechanical excavation equipment under supervision. Pipe Laying and Sewer Installation: Assist with the installation, connection, and testing of sewer pipes, ensuring that they are laid to the correct line and level. Help to align pipes and apply jointing materials, ensuring watertight seals. Backfill trenches and compact soil around installed pipes to stabilize them. Manhole Construction and Maintenance: Assist in the construction, repair, and maintenance of manholes, including bricklaying, concrete work, and installing manhole covers. Ensure that manholes are built according to specifications and are secure and accessible. Health and Safety Compliance: Follow all health and safety protocols, including wearing appropriate PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) at all times. Participate in safety briefings and toolbox talks, understanding the risks associated with working in confined spaces, near live utilities, and in challenging environments. Report any safety hazards, incidents, or near-misses to the Civils Ganger or Supervisor immediately. Support for Equipment Operation: Assist in the operation of small plant machinery and equipment under the direction of qualified operators. Help with loading and unloading materials, tools, and equipment from vehicles. Carry out routine checks and maintenance of tools and equipment, reporting any faults or damages. Communication and Teamwork: Work closely with other operatives, supervisors, and subcontractors to ensure smooth and efficient site operations. Follow instructions from the Civils Ganger or Supervisor precisely and complete tasks within set timeframes. Communicate effectively with team members to coordinate tasks and ensure the safe execution of work. Quality Control: Assist in ensuring that all work is completed to the required standards and specifications set by Southern Water. Check that materials used are of the correct type and quality, reporting any discrepancies to the Civils Ganger. Help identify any potential issues with the work being carried out, suggesting improvements where necessary. Emergency Response: Be prepared to assist in emergency situations, such as responding to bursts or leaks in sewerage systems. Participate in emergency drills and be aware of the procedures for evacuating the site safely Required Skills and Qualifications Experience: Previous experience in construction or civil engineering work, particularly in utilities or sewerage projects, is advantageous but not always required.
