We are working with an established civil engineering contractor that is currently engaged on interesting projects across the world. In the UK they have recently been very successful in securing a place on Network Rail’s CP5 framework. In order to ensure proper commercial delivery of this framework they are looking to employ 2 no. Senior Quantity Surveyors at their offices in Greater Manchester. It is envisaged that one of you will go onto a project to the North West of Greater Manchester and the other onto a scheme heading out towards Leeds. For this reason we’re interested in speaking to candidates throughout the North West. We are looking for candidates with good heavy civil engineering experience, rail sector knowledge is not an imperative although it would of course be an advantage. You should be comfortable working with MS Excel, have strong budgeting, forecasting and reporting skills, and be a pro-active worker capable of working on your own but not afraid to ask for help when it’s needed. We have been engaged by a North West civil engineering contractor to recruit a Quantity Surveyor to work as part of their successful rail team out of offices in the West of Greater Manchester. Reporting to the Senior QS your main role will be to assist in the financial management of schemes in their structures division. This will involve predominantly working from the office but will also require you to travel out to sites from time to time. You will be involved in site liaison, contract management in terms of any claims or variations, budgeting, forecasting, reporting using Excel, etc… To be considered for the role you should be able to show a progressive career as a contractor’s QS in a civil engineering environment. Although you’ll be working with the rail team the work is all civil engineering so although previous experience of working with Network Rail would be advantage it isn’t a necessity. You should be strong with reporting, a good communicator and a pro-active worker. Ideally you will also be degree qualified with membership (or on course for membership) of a relevant chartered body. You should also be strong with MS Excel as that is the main reporting tool used by the company. The client is looking to fill the role quickly and will therefore take a candidate on a freelance basis but ultimately will always be looking to find a permanent employee. We are working to recruit a Senior Planner for a main civil engineering contractor currently busy working on a CP5 Framework Contract with Network Rail in the East Midlands region. The scope of the framework covers the refurbishment and renewal of Network Rail Assets to Structures and Properties as well as Earthworks and Route Clearance works. Individual Contract Values can vary between £0.5 to 5.0 Million and the Framework is managed from Co-Located offices in Derby, shared with Network Rail and other Framework Contractors. The ideal candidate will have 4 to 5 years Planning experience and will need to demonstrate a high degree of competence in the use of Primavera P6 Planning Software package. In addition to this the candidate should be able to demonstrate hands on experience as either an Engineer or Site Manager and from this gained sufficient knowledge to enable them to compile a full construction programme from reference to the contract documentation and drawings with minimal input from the Project Manager. Ideally they should have some experience as a tender planner. The General duties will comprise of the following:- • Preparation of Tender and Construction Programmes • Resource & Cost Loading of these Programmes. • Application of Project and Activity Codings to enable production of “Construction Friendly” Programmes and reports. • Monitoring of design and construction progress by means of weekly trackers by pro-actively chasing update information. • Periodic updating of programmes. • Recording and impacting into programs, Delays, Early Warnings and the like. • Production of monthly progress reports. • Work closely with project commercial team in producing financial reports and valuations • Client Liaison and Meetings attendance The CP5 Team at Derby is a very motivated and dedicated team with project management often being hard to tie down. We are working alongside an established and experienced railway infrastructure contractor who have a successful track record of delivering projects across the whole of the UK; working with Network Rail, London Underground as well as light rail and tram operating companies to enhance the national infrastructure. An opportunity has arisen for a Project Engineer (OLE) to work on the East Coast Power Supply Upgrade (ECPSU) contract. The role will be based in Doncaster. The main responsibilities associated with the role are to: • Provide effective communication of information to facilitate compliance with Statutory, Industry, Mandatory and Employer requirements for use by the projects team. • Liaise with the projects team personnel to ensure their requirement are understood and complied with. • Provide input as required to the bid and work winning teams to ensure the Employer can present the client with competitive and compliant tenders. Provide input on design, buildability and methodologies as required. • Undertake all work in accordance with all relevant client and/or Employer Standards and Instructions. • Undertake Risk Assessments as required throughout the project lifecycle. • Provide input as required to SSOW planners to enable safe systems of work to be established for all works. • Provide guidance and support as necessary to site teams to ensure: methodologies and processes for work delivery are developed; work undertaken is in accordance with the design, is compliant with client requirements and meets the required quality standard. You will be self-motivated with a pro-active approach and have experience of working under pressure and meeting tight deadlines. Problem solving, communication and good interpersonal skills are a key requirement for this role. We have been engaged by one of the UK’s leading civil engineering contractors to assist them in their hunt for an Assistant QS to work as part of their successful Rail team in Greater Manchester. This is predominantly an office based job split between the contractor’s offices in Greater Manchester and Network Rail offices in Birmingham which you will required to travel to probably once per week and some requirement to visit site on occasion. Working on a number of varied schemes for the client (Network Rail) you will be responsible for assisting with tasks for the Quantity Surveyor and Senior QS. To be considered for the role you should be degree qualified and have gained experience of working for a main contracting organisation. This is a civil engineering role so any experience in the sector would be advantageous however general construction in a main contracting environment is also acceptable. The main purpose of the role will be to liaise with the operational site teams to ensure commercial opportunity is being realised at every stage. We are working alongside one of the UK’s leading privately owned civil engineering contractors to help secure the services of a Managing Quantity Surveyor whose role will be look after a team of QSs operating in the power sector out of offices in Edinburgh. Reporting to the Business Unit Commercial Manager (remotely) your role will be to ensure smooth running of all schemes under your control. The majority of the work will be under a framework agreement with SSE and as such you will be required to build successful relationships with your counterparts. The main form of contract being utilised is an amended FIDIC form so it’s not expected candidates will have too much experience of it, obviously any FIDIC experience would be an advantage though. Given that you’ll be the Senior commercial team member in the office you will need to show a good deal of proactivity as the role will be pretty much autonomous with only fortnightly meetings expected when either the Business Unit Commercial Manager (or his number two) come to visit. You will need to gather all the salient information from the QSs on site and then report that via company templates. You should already be a competent user of Excel in terms of reporting. The role will suit someone who is process driven, comes from a main contractor background and, ideally, has good experience of communicating with SSE. A national contractor soon to open offices in Edinburgh is looking to secure the services of 2no. QS/SQS to work on sites throughout Scotland. The schemes are all in the power sector and can include projects such as HVDC Interconnectors, substation builds, cross-country cable routing, etc… Having been operating in Scotland for approximately a year the Employer has had enough success to take on permanent offices in Edinburgh which will be ready for 2017. Based out of these offices but working the majority of your time on site this role will require a fair amount of travelling. Current sites in Aberdeen and Hunterston attest to the geographical range that they are undertaking. It is worth noting that all travel expenses will be covered. The purpose of the role will be to manage all commercial activities as they relate to the site that you’re on. This will include significant liaison with the client and the site teams to ensure smooth running of the contracts and also provide the right environment to seek out commercial opportunities where appropriate. The contract is amended FIDIC so any experience of this would be an advantage but isn’t necessary. To be considered for the role you should be able to provide evidence of a progressive career either to the point where you feel you’re ready for the step up to Senior QS or where you’ve already got there but are looking for more varied experience. In this instance we’re looking for people with solid Quantity Surveying skills and as such it is not imperative that you come from a civil engineering background. It is important that you have good experience of working with Main Contracting organisations. You will need to contractually competent and an excellent reporter, budget and forecaster.
