Due to continued growth and success they now have a rare opportunity to join their commercial team as an Assistant Quantity Surveyor on a permanent basis.
The Role
In your new role as Assistant Quantity Surveyor, you will report into and work closely with the lead QS out on site, on New Build Commercial, Industrial and student accommodation projects of values between £20-£60m. As the role progresses you will be given the opportunity to manage your own construction packages under the guidance and leadership of the lead QS. Typical roles and responsibilities can be found below…
* Liaise with the site teams and take the lead with contract administration and record keeping
* Identify opportunities to maximise cost/value management
* Assist with the procurement and management of subcontract packages
* Assist with the internal valuations/CVR/End Life Forecasts
* Assist with preparation of contractual claims
* Measure and assess the work undertaken and then submit detailed, accurate and timely applications
* Support the project team in all commercial matters

The Role
You will support the Commercial Manager in the day to day running of a busy commercial department. The focus will be all financial and commercial aspects of the site. Managing up to 3 projects at any one time, you will be leading the site-based Quantity Surveying teams and working closely with the Project Team to control all commercial & contractual matters. The main duties involved in this role will include but not limited to:
• Attend tender presentations for new projects, contribute, lead commercially and present
• During proposal stage, prepare the budget and prelims build up, obtain and vet trade contractor bids, compile the company information section for the proposal document and collate the overall document
• Prepare trade contractor bid list in conjunction with the Project Manager and obtain approval via team meetings
• Prepare and monitor bid package tender schedule and report against the cost plan where required and advise on selection of trade contractors
• Advise client on contract procurement routes available
• Prepare and monitor Subcontract Procurement Schedule, compile trade contract bid documents and carry out tender analysis and issue purchase orders
• Place orders and instruct / manage trade contractors. (Including compiling subcontracts/works contacts/trade contracts)
• Manage change orders in conjunction with the Site/Project Manager
• Prepare, submit and agree monthly costs reports, collating information from other Project/Assistant surveyors as necessary
• Prepare, submit and agree periodic valuations for work completed to date with trade contractors and the client including preparation of rolling final account & subsequent final account agreement
• Prepare Cost/Value Reconciliation (CVR), create regular budget and price updates, update computerised cost control system and prepare the monthly cost and progress report for Directors responsible.
• Risk & Cash Management.
• Involvement in BD / developing relationships with key clients & design teams

We have been engaged by one of the UK’s leading civil engineering contractors to assist them in their hunt for an Assistant QS to work as part of their successful Rail team in Greater Manchester.
This is predominantly an office based job split between the contractor’s offices in Greater Manchester and Network Rail offices in Birmingham which you will required to travel to probably once per week and some requirement to visit site on occasion. Working on a number of varied schemes for the client (Network Rail) you will be responsible for assisting with tasks for the Quantity Surveyor and Senior QS.
To be considered for the role you should be degree qualified and have gained experience of working for a main contracting organisation. This is a civil engineering role so any experience in the sector would be advantageous however general construction in a main contracting environment is also acceptable. Any experience of working on Rail schemes would also be an advantage. For reporting purposes you should be a capable user of MS Excel.
