Job Description

We re seeking a detail-driven Estimator to take ownership of the pre-construction pricing process and support the growth of our projects division. This role is ideal for someone with strong cost planning and pricing experience who thrives at the front-end of the project lifecycle.

Unlike a delivery-focused Quantity Surveyor, this position centres on tender pricing, supplier engagement and preparing submission-ready proposals, ensuring competitiveness and commercial accuracy before projects are handed over to the QS team for delivery control.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead tender pricing and cost preparation from initial enquiry to submission

  • Analyse drawings, specifications, and site information to produce accurate cost estimates

  • Liaise with subcontractors and suppliers to obtain and compare quotations

  • Build and maintain pricing schedules / BoQs with clear allowances and risk provisions

  • Assess potential preliminary costs, resource requirements, and programme considerations

  • Attend pre-tender meetings and provide commercial input at bid stage

  • Work with project and commercial teams to hand over successfully priced jobs

  • Evaluate risk elements early (ground conditions, planning, surveys, access etc.)

  • Identify value engineering opportunities to support tender competitiveness

  • Maintain relationships with supply chain to drive efficiency and cost advantage

  • Support the development of bid strategies and post-tender clarifications

Skills & Experience

  • Proven experience as an Estimator (or QS with strong estimating background) especially in construction, civils, housing or related sectors

  • Strong background in tendering, cost build-up, and price negotiation

  • Comfortable evaluating scope and project risks before delivery stage

  • Able to work from technical drawings and site data confidently

  • Commercially aware with understanding of margins, prelims and bid strategy

  • Proficient in constructing BOQs and using estimating tools / Excel

  • Understanding of NEC or JCT contracts beneficial (but not the core of this role)

  • Attention to detail, numerically precise and deadline-focused

  • Strong communicator, capable of engaging effectively with suppliers and internal teams
