Job Description

We are now looking to recruit a Technical Officer to join our Team in Didcot. This is a permanent position working 20 hours per week. We are offering a salary of £14,997

This varied role is to provide technical advice, assistance and support to older or disabled people and other vulnerable individuals who wish to repair, adapt or improve their homes, offering technical service for DFG and major repairs and adaptations within the County Contract and to assist the Branch Manager in all aspects of financial control and reporting. You will be involved in providing an appropriate technical service for the benefit of customers and colleagues from the referral stage through to completion of works within the framework required by the Branch.

Developing the Technical service as appropriate and contribute to the overall development of the Mears Home Improvement Ltd business as part of Mears Group.

Key Responsibilities

  • Liaise with clients and customers to ensure we meet their service requirements, visiting them in their own homes, providing the required level of advice and information, and maintaining regular contact with them at each stage of the case.
  • To assess the building work required to the property.
  • To identify property defects and to recommend priorities, prepare preliminary costings, prepare schedules of works, working drawings and implement Mears Home Improvement Ltd's tendering process and evaluate the quotations.
  • To maintain and review an up-to-date Register of Preferred Contractors.
  • To administer the Contracts for Works, instruct contractors and monitor the quality of workmanship.
  • Be accountable to the Branch Manager for the Technical service delivered by the Branch and report in a timely manner.
  • To assist with & contribute towards the development of a private service/increasing income.
  • Liaise with and maintain good working relationships with other professionals from external, statutory and voluntary organisations to the enhancement of the Branch service.
  • Ensure the MCM database is fully utilized and kept up-to-date at all times.
  • Preparation of monthly reports on performance (including financial) for the Branch Manager and clients at District / County Levels.
  • Ensure full compliance with the Mears Policies & Procedures.
  • Suitability of contractors and ongoing quality control and management, including Health & Safety. Ensure contractors comply with policy.
  • Liaison with site personnel, client representatives and customers to ensure high standards of service.
  • To comply with Company Rules, Quality Standards and Health & Safety Procedures.
  • To support and practice the Company's Customer Care Philosophy to ensure customer satisfaction.
  • To follow the Company's Equalities Policies in relation to other staff, customers and members of the Group, at a level appropriate to the post.
  • To follow the Mears Safety Policy, particularly with regard to the agreed Codes of Practice and Safe Systems of Work.
  • To work with the Team to ensure an equitable service across the District / County.
  • Contribute to the development of plans to grow private business and increase income.
  • Contribute to the development and maintenance of a Schedule of Rates across the County.
  • To undertake any other duties as required by the Company from time to time. If these duties are of a greater level of responsibility or skill than those required in the post, then full training and appropriate supervision will be provided.
  • Assisting the Branch Manager with other duties as reasonably instructed.

Candidate profile

Knowledge of the building industry and practical understanding of domestic repairs and/or Home Improvement services.

Working knowledge of Regulations including building and planning, the Party Wall etc. Act 1996, the Construction Design & Management Regulations (CDM).

Knowledge of legislation including Health & Safety.

Current knowledge of computerised systems - including data management systems, Word, Excel, database and Quick Architect/CAD systems.

Experience of working to deadlines in a busy site/office environment.

Proven technical experience in house construction, property surveys, tender preparation and negotiation, contract administration, quality and cost control.

Ability to complete property inspections with limited access.

Ability to work effectively as part of a small team.

Full, clean UK Driving Licence and use of vehicle for home/site visits.

Use of general office equipment/administration experience.

We would also be keen to hear from candidates who have: Knowledge of Home Improvement sector. Experience of maximising income and minimising costs.Experience of working with older people and/or people with disabilities. Member of RCIS, RIBA, CIOB, BIAT.HNC or HND Building Studies.
